Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was paid only 800 rubles for ‘Swan Lake.’ The ballet was based on King Ludwig II’s life which Russians disliked and also called it “unimaginative” and “unmemorable.” Swan Lake was a failure during Tchaikovsky’s lifetime.
